Last fall the steering column in my 84 became very loose. It moves side to side and up and down over an inch in each direction. It was sudden, one day it was normal, then it just got wicked loose. Any experience with column looseness anyone? Is it a bearing on the shaft, or something that holds the whole column? Car has 150,000 miles so im sure its normal wear. thanks!
On my 84 I removed the horn/contact plate, steering wheel, turn signal switch and lock ring plate. You will then see 3 torex screws, tighten the screws and see if you notice a difference. In my case the bearing was shot within the colunm. I actually removed the column and replaced it with a quality used one.
If you choose not to purchase the tools, Auto Zone has a good tool rental program. Pay for the tools and return with 45 days and you receive your cash back. Good luck
As mentioned in my tech tip (I am getting famous!), the tools are CHEAP.
I bought mine...
the pins are a sinch to remove... just have the right tool.
and the entire process is much easier if you remove the column. I also suggest, depending on miles, to replace all the internal switching... then you won't have to worry about it for a long time!
Thank you much for the info guys, but it sounds a little to involved for my experience level, im afraid of breaking those expensive parts. Does anyone know of anyone who sells rebuilt columns on an exchange basis? thanks again!
Suugest you also check with GM. There have been some service bulletins on steering column problems over the years. Might be a free fix out there. Look up Corvette Action Center on the net for a listing.
