Default Engine Help Needed

Alright here's the deal. My car has had problems cranking for a few weeks

now. I figured it was the security thing inside the key keeping it from

cranking so I changed out keys and it worked fine for about a week. Now its

doing the same thing again. When I try to crank, there is no response from

the starter, but all the accessories turn on(radio ac). After about 3-5 attempts

at cranking it finally turns over. Well today I get out to move the car and it

does the cranking bit again. But, when I try to kill it, the engine dies but

something(I assume its the starter) continues running under the hood that

makes the car just sit there and shake. When I pushed the key back into the

starting position(without pushing it forward to crank) it automatically started

back up. When I sat there and revved the engine for a little while it shut off

normally. Then it did the same thing again when I tried to turn it off without

having previously revved it. Also, while it was idling there, I noticed the dash

lights fade in and out every once in a while like the battery was dying. The

battery isnt old at all and I'm at a loss as to whether this is just the starter,

the ignition or something else I don't know about. Sorry this is so long, but I

tried to give all the details of whats happening with it. Any help is greatly

appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like an ignition switch to me, especially if the starter is staying engaged. Had that problem with a motor home, new ignition switch cured it-that's just my .02cents worth. :seeya

Sounds like the car is "running on" when you turn it off. It's usually caused by heavy carbon build up in the cylinders and causes the car to continue running (by chugging along) after the car is turned off. It sounds like you have two seperate problems. I'd try a new starter solenoid for the cranking problems and a new set of plugs and a top engine cleaner for the "run on".

Thanks for the help, I'm going to try a new starter solenoid and a new ignition switch, and maybe some new plugs and see how it goes. Thanks
