I ignored the standing water until it finally rotted my hatch window rubber. The rubber seperated right in the corner where the drain goes. It looked like I had a couple of black hockey sticks coming out of the side of the car, and you can't just stuff them back under the glass.
I bought the drain kits AND new rubber, and haven't had any more problems. The corners of the rear window are dry as soon as my car is dry. After installing the drains I realized in retrospect how much of a P.I.T.A. it was to dry, and re-dry those stupid corners after every wash. I'd still get the inevitable water streaks as soon as I took the first corner, which doesn't fare well on a freshly washed black car. :yesnod:
As long as you take your time and follow the instructions, the installation is not that big of a deal.
