Anyone know the fuel tank capacity on my 1985 as my guage is very jerky. I know they can stumble on hard cornering with as little as 6 gallons from what ive heard. This morning i had this happen so i filled the tank and it took 17 gallons.....empty, or not? Thanks all!
You guys reply like lightning! So i guess my guage is definitely jerked and I guess it starts acting up around 3 gallons. The damn guage reads full almost always. This morning when i got the "stumble" it read 3/4. I guess the Reserve light acts in conjuntion with the guage being accurate unfortunately. (Otherwise the hell with it...) Looks like it's time for a sender. Anyone do one of these b4? I was told by a somewhat reputable source its located under the Fuel door assy? Easy to do, or be prepared to hurl wrenches and other objects like ratchets at the nearest blue oval available?
I'll bet it had less than the 3 gallons you thought it had. When do you shut the pump off? At what point do you determine it is full? I can add 3 - 3.5 gal. after the initial pump shut off. I milk mine until the gasoline comes slightly over the flapper valve. I know mine is full.
20, think the most I've ever been able to fill it to was 19.5. I normally fill at about a half a tank around town, I've already burnt out a fuel pump before, needs the fuel to cool off. Also when I've AutoXed anything less then 1/3 tank and you run the risk of fuel stavation, these tanks don't seem to be designed very well. Its not very fun to be in the middle of a turn and the engine near die on you, then spring back to life.
:iagree:
Does anyone know if i can prchase this stuff as a set? (Pickup tube, sock, pump and sender?) Aside from going straight to GM? (A.K.A. "the poorhouse")

changeing Pickup tube, sock, pump is easy...however if your gas gauge is not acturate the the sender is the problem...now if you price it out it will cost about 400.00 bucks from the general...
what i did to replace the sender/float assembly...went to wreckers and found a similiar unit..now this new unit must be diassembled...you want only the carbon contact which is worn and makes blut contact with coil) and the resistance coils Check coils for ressistance similiar to that of the old .they could very a little bit...fit these new components into the old shell using the old float bracket,, depending on skill level it can be done without soldering...reassemble...use some patience and common sense and you will have you fuel gauge working acturately again. :)
As CFI said, fill it up past initial shut off. Mine doesn't take quite 3 gallons, but I can usually squeeze about another $1 worth of gas into her, sometimes $2 worth, so around .75-1.5 gallons, and I'm sure I could probably get a little more if I tested it. I ended up just having someone do my sending unit, labor was only $78.95, but the part was right at $480 plus a few little things that came with it we changed out.
Korvette,
My only thing is how can you be sure the boneyard sender will be any good? Did you just take a crap-shoot at it and get lucky? At the cost of a new one, i can certainly see why this may be a decent lottery.....
Well, keep in mind that I didn't shop around for a cheaper product, but the guy at the shop I had it done at DOES give the parts for cost to us but he buys from a vendor so it kind of cancels out.
In comparison, in Austin, same part, same labor, we were quoted ~$900 for the total job and that was from several places. So whether the part was cheap or not, I think I got SOMEWHAT of an OK deal.
Someone should be able to send you to a site that will get it to you for cheaper.
