The knock sensor is like a microphone and only puts out a voltage when knock occurs in the cylinders. Without the engine running, the knock sensor has no output and cannot be told if it is defective or not. The O2 sensor puts out a voltage, 0.1 volts high oxygen (lean) to 0.9 volts low oxygen (rich). A 10 megohm per volt or higher voltmeter is required to make the measurement. The O2 sensor needs to above 400 F before an accurate measurement can be made and codes are set if the sensor is open circuit or puts out a voltage outside of 0.1 to 0.9 volts.

One way to test the knock sensor is to hook up a timing light and have someone tap lightly on the blockwith a small hammer and see if the timing retards

I think it would help!!! You can buy a little wiring adaptor at MAD that allows you to test the O2, but the engine has to be running. :)

You should get codes if either of them is not working.
