Warming up engine
What can I say. I live 2.8 miles from work. I have to be there at 7am. I often wake at 6:50  . How long should I be warming the engine up before taking off at high speeds to get to work? Keep in mind on my 86 the temperature only says "LO" until it gets really warm. I do notice that the rmps start around 1100 and gradually slow until they bottom out at a 700 idle speed.
:auto:
I like to warm mine until it reads coolant temp. (100 degrees) Oil temp doesn't read till 150, you'll go crazy waiting for that at an idle...lol. Since you are in NC i wouldn't worry too much, just give it at least 2 minutes. (You might have to do this by 6:48 a.m. lol) I'm in New York so since it's still much colder in the morning here, i like to let it go a bit longer. Easy for me to say; remote start and all ;) I'm usually at least 10 minutes late to work regardless...lol Whether I take the vette or my bike which are both quite capable of "hurrying up." Just try not to crank it over and put it in gear as soon as it starts and you'll be ok!
No, you shouldnt let it warm up before taking off. Just check to see if you have oil pressure. Your engine is better off by just getting in and going, not letting it warm up at idle speed.
You should not be punching it either when its cold.
Take it out once a week and let it get hot, dont let it idle to warm up every day.
Running the engine at an idle is worse than gently driving until it warms. An engine will warm faster when being driven that it will sitting at an idle. A cold engine sitting at idle will contaminate the oil faster than the same engine that is started and driven gently.
Just my 2 cents, After letting it warm up a few minutes at idle it is still 8
miles or so before the oil temp approaches 180. I try not to really "lean on it"
until I see 180 oil temp. I think you ought to take the long way home once in a while. Short hops are bad because the oil does'nt get hot enough to boil off the condensation.
