Yes, you need washers under the heads of the head bolts. Without the washers, the bolt's head will cut into the aluminum causing uneven loading of the bolt torque.

I'm guessing that you ordered the wrong head bolt kit, you must have gotten a set for an iron head engine.

ARP, SPS, Moroso, and many other sells head bolt sets which come with the required washers. The washers should have a flat side and a beveled side; the flat side goes against the head.

Hope this helps.

If the new bolts are the right length and otherwise correct, can't he just reuse the old washers? I was going to mention this earlier, but I'm not that familiar with the LT series engines.

Maybe yes and maybe no. Depends on the size of the head on the bolts (the underside) and how well the washers he has index with the new bolts' underside.

Thanks again CF kix azz.... :chevy (no the old washers are sized to the bolt ...They slide.... they spin ...but they dont come off :nonod: )

I was afraid they might not be removable, that's why I kept silent. My 1984 - 1989 Corvette parts book doesn't show head bolt washers for anything. Do the aluminum headed L98s have a washer faced bolt? *I* sure wouldn't want to bolt down an aluminum head without washers.

CFI-EFI, my 87 has headbolt washers stock. The i.d. is smaller than the threads, so it stays put. :chevy

FWIW I just did my heads on my LT4 about 6 weeks ago. The original bolts did not have washers under them. My new ARP head bolts have washers and of course I did use them :)

Steel bolts---aluminum heads=corrosion.
Steel bolts---iron heads=fine.
You need the washers. :) Any time you are joing 2 different metals.

The coating on the bolts would usually protect, but when the metal contacts and spins, this coating will get rubbed off. The solution, aluminum washers. This minimizes the corrosion levels which still exists but it's only washers and bolts rather than the heads themselves.

I had to replace a head bolt when I re-built a 355 a few years ago so I went to Chevy for a single replacement. It came with an intergral washer to the bolt head. No, not one that is in addition to the bolt, but part of the bolt itself.

I questioned it at the parts counter since it was different from the other head bolts I had and I was shown on their computer screen that it's the correct replacement head bolt.

I do know that some aftermarket head bolt companies - Milidon comes to mind - call for ordering a washer package when you get their head bolts. the bolts and washers are sold separately, but the ARPs I'm running came with washer.

A guy I know installed a new pair of AFR 210s without using washers under the heads of the head bolts and you should see the mess they made of the heads. The car owner needed to send the heads back to AFR to have the head bolt seats repaired.
