Could I have the wrong dipstick--or am I just a dipstick?
I leak fluid down to about 2 quarts low, then I don't leak any more at all. The transmission works/shifts fine--no problems. Someone told me that the 700R4 has an overflow that drains fluid out if you put too much in. I can leave the car in the garage, fill the fluidto the proper level, shut the car off and leave it there for a week or so and two quarts will have drained out onto the floor.
My pan isn't leaking--I know that for sure. It could be leaking at the seal where the shift shaft comes out--that would really explain this I guess, but maybe I just have the wrong dipstick. Does anyone have a photo of a 700R4 dipstick? It sure would be nice if I just had the wrong dipstick and I was just repeatedly overflowing the thing.
I know this won't help, but my astro van(not sure if it's a 700 or 200) does the same thing. I can drive it and never drop a drop...leave it for a week or so and theres a large puddle under it. Not sure.... :lurk:
WOW ! Two quarts is a ton. The dipsticks for 1984 and 85 are the same part number. Other years mayhave the same markings, but the part numbers leave doubt as to where the difference lies. You can check your dipstick, with a known correct item, but then, the dipstick tube comes into the picture. I think *I* would isolate the source of the leakage, first. Then, you may have to drop the pan to find out how much fluid is actually in there. Bummer! Good luck, and...
Pull the torque converter cover (4 bolts) and check inside behind the converter. The front seal in a known leaker on these. You should be able to feel the fluid on the front face of the tranny if its leaking. Hope its something simpler though.
