ZF6 Tranny Noise
Bought this Vette at a REALLY good price and one of the things I noticed right off was clutch wear. Ordered a new RAM clutch, pressure plate, throughout bearing and pilot bushing from Summit. Clutch is super smooth and grabs well. The problem I'm having is that I'm hearing a loud noise when decelerating. If I push the cluch in, the noise virtually goes away. Doesn't make any noise while in neutral and stopped. So......sounds like througout bearing banging around. This is the first time me and my boys have dealt with a ZF6 so when we noticed the setup push/pull we were amazed, and yet entriqued. I I followed the manual on removing the bellhousing; remove ball stud screw lock, screw in ball stud screw to release fork, turn housing/fork assembly countercockwise to release fork from bearing...yadda yadda. When putting it back together, the manual I was reading didn't mention anything of what to do with the now sunken in ball stud screw on the fork, so I backed it back out flush with the bell housing like it originally was. Looking at my shop manual (which I left home :banghead: ) I read that the screw was to be torque to 30 lbs. Which I don't get. If you back it out until it's flushed, why the torque spec. Which got me to thinking, was I supposed to flush it, then turn it in to 30 ft/lbs? Since we're hearing this noise, we'll have to go back in and do something...but I'd like to know what to do before doing it....Get it? :nopity

Next time, don't bother with this stud, you can pull the fork back without touching the ball stud.

My ball stud was tightened to 30+ ft-lbs then the lock goes on. Sometimes you need to remove the stud. If the clutch is worn badly you will not be able to slide the clutch forks back off the stud. That was the problem I had.
