As some know I fishing around on whow to uppgrade my bottom end. I decided to go ARP everywhere. But what about the main caps, should I uppgrade those to mildon 2 bolt caps? Or perhaps the stock is good enough with ARP bolts? Anyone experience any trouble on high modyfied ( 400hp+ ) 2 bolt main engines?
The 2 bolt bottom end should be good for at least 450hp. The aftermarket caps are expensive to install (i know i have callies billet splayed 4bolt main caps)because the line bore process is not done at all machine shops most shops only offer the line hone process. Unless you are going to be using it at the drag strip a whole bunch and abusing the engine its not worth it. :nonod:
It's largely an RPM thing: if you're staying around 6000, stock caps, cast crank, hyd-roller cam, etc. Above that you're wanting 4-bolt billet caps, forged crank, solid roller cam, etc.
After almost fainting at the cost of fitting aftermarket caps / 4-bolt conversion, my engine builder recommended stock 2-bolt caps installed with ARP studs. And always use good rod bolts! I roadrace my vette and never had a problem, but it's only a blown 383 with 540hp...
