What is the first indication that your fuel pump is starting to die? Sometimes it's hard to start, and it starts missing at around 2800-3200 rpms. If it is a fuel pump what is the procedure on up grading to a newer style pump, my vette is an 84' coupe. Any help would be appreciated--Jim R :chevy :chevy

Re: Fuel Pump Problem????? (jr7221)
Mine started lurching on the highway, pretty much died all at once. It still sort of worked after that, but didn't flow enough to keep it running. I think there's probably a plastic impeller pressed onto the motor shaft, which either slipped off or broke.
Prior to it going out, I had starvation problems when cornering and accelerating with less than a 1/4 tank. I'm not sure if this was due to the fuel pump, or just a result of the Corvette's crappy fuel tank design.
If your '84 is still a X-fire you can't use the later high pressure pump.
You could put a fuel pressure gauge onto it to see if it's holding pressure while driving.
The failure mode for my fuel pump was that it suddenly died in the middle of the street in Chandler, AZ with no fuel at the fuel rail, just after I took delivery of it.
BTW, that miss could be due to other things like bad ignition wires or even dirty/failing injectors.

Sez who???
It ain't the pump that makes the pressure.
A weak fuel pump won't usually, cause a miss at any particular rpm. It will just drop off in power as it tries to rev, due to a lack of fuel volume. The pump simply won't be able to keep up. Because the pump starts failing to deliver enough volume, the ability to start is the last symptom. Good luck, and...
