Last fall my brakes were suddenly really hard one day--I had to stand on them to get the car stopped. I had put a new master cylinder on it about 2 years ago, so I ordered a booster and finally installed it last weekend.
First of all, the booster didn't really fit. I had to adjust the adjuster all the way in and it still wasn't enough, so I put a thin washer on each bolt between the booster and the fire wall. It worked--the brakes weren't on constantly.
But now, the pedel goes easily almost to the floor, and slows the car just a little--sightly and steadily--until the pedel has completed 80% of its travel, then it breaks the car enough to stop it.
Did you bleed the brakes after changing the booster? Some air may have entered the brake system. By the way, if you did'nt bleed the brakes and are going to, make sure you flush the old brake fluid out also. Our cars are easy without the ABS. Hope the booster was correct for that 84. It should fit without such adjustments.
When I bought it last fall I was told by a couple of places that they had just stopped making them for the 84. I kept calling and finally found a place that still had them. Now I know that they didn't still have them--they sent me one that ought to fit close! The directions talk about shimming or removing shims to get it to fit properly. I just had to shim.
I never disconnected the brake lines so there shouldn't be any air in the lines...how could air have gotten in the lines??
