I know this is an Exhausting subject,, but,,
has any one actually broke down all the exhaust components to see how much HP gains are from replacing each piece or systems,, EXAMPLE,,
1 stock exhaust with high flow mufflers or eliminaters
2 stock exhaust but with a CAT back system [how much does that rear Y
help ]
3 stock exhaust but remove main CAT
4 stock exhaust but with new catless front Y
5 any mix of the above
This way guys can compair and see what is the best bang for the dollar on a particular budget.
I know the numbers would be different on different types of engines [L98 / LT1] and what kind of upgrades.
I'm looking for stock L98 with free/cheep type mods kind of numbers.
I only have a partial breakdown on exhaust mods. Of course these numbers include a little tuning by bumping fuel pressure as required to compensate for increased air flow.
I did hi-flow front Y, cat & cat-back and gained ~20chp; Vic'89, with similar mods as mine, then added LT headers for another 15chp gain.

Re: Exhaust HP (KTA1000)
Paul, I don't have dyno numbers to back this up but last year I took a risk and had the Y pipe chopped so that each side now has its own pipes and cat...the difference in performance was noticable but I can't put a "number" on it...besides, the sound at WOT is amazing! :) You need a good muffler shop who know what they're doing but the results are worth it (I have headers on my car as well). Good luck with your post...I'll be following it with some interest
Exhaust upgrades will yiels nice gains on an L98. I would follow 65Z01's advice. Larger front and rear y-pipes (no precats) with free flow mufflers and a hollowed main cat netted me about .35 in the quarter mile. There's still more to be had when I get long tube headers. :yesnod:
My car will have a new sound as soon as the weather breaks , one way or the other. I went to my Muffler guy for ideas and prices last week, I was looking at putting on eliminators only,, he said a more bang for the buck was a test pipe [shhhh, dont tell know one]. I figure it would be too loud with both [plus still illegal]. BUT I still wonder wich robs more power, the mufflers or CAT.
Anyways,, Eliminators = $125 or Cat Back =$450 + price wise, I'm leaning tward the eliminators and maby later a new front Y
I'm looking for advise, any one want to talk me out of this?
