Alright, so a friend of a friend claims he got a ticket for 170mph in his 95 vette (4 speed). Any possibility to this being true? I've found varying accounts of the c4's factory top speed and thought you guys would have a solid answer.
Well it's always possible. He would have been turning 5300 RPM's in overdrive, which is still possible. A bone stock LT1 6-spd would do 172 as tested by Car & Driver or Motor Trend in 92. The problem is with the "ticket"

:withstupid:
How many miles did he have of clear road to get it up to that speed? With 2.59 gears in the rear, he could get up there with some open roadway.
Did they clock him or pace him? I work for a PD (not a cop)... I would also say :bs on the speed...I think the cop had a hard on for your friend...and he probably was speeding....anyway- it may be too late for this but...have him or his lawyer ask to have either the radar gun or the car used to pace him verified that they were recently calibrated...cruisers have to have a regular calibration on the speedo to pace others cars...this has to be done to hold up in court...if either the gun or the car missed a calibration date...he may have a way out...or at least get a lesser fine...it usually is the first thing a good traffic lawyer would ask for...
Motor Trend did an article back in '95 that's stuck in my head even after all the years of exposure to super and ultra high RF and shiftwork. They took every car available in the states for under $50k that year that could go 140mph or higher and did a page or so on each. A '95 Vette off the showroom floor put up a top speed of 167. They did the runs in both directions to account for wind, different grades, etc, so it would be possible to go 170 in a stock vette.
I don't know about an automatic though. A note, though, my low revving L98 w/ an auto and 3.45 gears did over 150 on the dyno last weekend, so in theory, the higher revving LT1 with higher(lower numerically) gears could probably manage. Remember that with the vette tranny valve bodies and ecm tune, it will wot shift into overdrive.
I don't buy that they let him go with a few years probation and cmty service. Ask to see the ticket. It'll show the speed he was caught at. My question would be where he found the space to make a run like that. Not many highways left in the states that has a good enough road surface and light enough traffic to get away with those speeds.
This should be all a matter of public record, a trip to the court will prove or disprove this quick... Heck, even if you put a case of beer on it, just seeing a ticket for 170 would be worth it! Some states even have free access to the court records on the net, I know WI does.
Since there isn't any cop cars that will go that fast, he was obviously ticketed based on radar or an airplane patrol.
Is it possible he could have actually done that speed? Or could the ticket be bogus. Radar is not used much here in CA because of the inherent irregularities in the way they work. But is it possible? There's an old say,
ANYTHING is possible given enough money and enough time!
Well not that anyone cares nor asked .. I took the highway at 3:30 Am to go to work like I do every morning one morning a few months ago here on I95 and started flooring it.. about 4 miles of highway before I had to exit.....
No cars... no one in site .... just creeping the speedo!!!
until way in the distance I saw blue lights... I promise on all 3 of my daughters... I was pulled over and I didn't get my licence ran, he didn't care to see my insurance.... let alone a ticket!!
God is my witness .. it was a younger state trooper .. He was really mad now.. He pulled aside of me not behind me and screamed at me in not too nicer words.. from his car that I was a maniac and he proceeded to tell me he didn't feel like picking up peices of my sorry butt for miles right before the end of his shift!!
I jeopordized his life while not caring about my own.....
claiming he was trying to catch up to me for a good mile.
He was in a Camaro Ls1 FHP unit.
I felt like such an butt ... he was right tho!!
I was so scared especially when he screamed at me he could take my license .. tow my car ... and put me in jail...
I was so apologetic to say the least .. told him he was right ..my life wasn't worth me being late to work... he kept screaming at me from his car mad as hell ... he was also visibly pretty shaken up too... like when you see a ghost.. adrenalin I guess.
He finally said consider this the luckiest day of your whole damn life.... get out of here before you are any later!!
God is my witness he didn't even ask to see my license!!!! Nothing!!!
Man if I could ever shake that mans hand or buy him a beer.
I don't know if he clocked me or not since he may have been too busy pursuing I don't know how it works...
I just remember 141 when I saw blue lights in the dim far distance before I started to slow down and saying to self I cannot believe what I've done!!??!!
I'm a 32 year moron pullin a teenage ignorant stunt!!
Stupidest day ever .... I've never even gone over 100 since then !!
I've told this story a few times and If it didn't happen to me I probably would have a hard time believing it my self!!!
I might get a few BS flags here but in my heart its the good god honest truth...
A quick note ... crap happens really fast at 141 I cannot imajine 170 I'd like to experience it but would be to chicken to risk having to pay the price!!
That's gotta be the hardest job in the world...Not handing out speeding tickets...But crawling inside a crumpled wreck to see if some teenage girl is still alive...
My Dad did it in Baltimore county, MD for 21 years I could tell you stories that would make your head spin. I would tell him he should have wrote a book. To him it was another day on the job.
