Anybody got any ideas on how much the spark plug gap really affects performance? I've heard that you should run the biggest gap that you can fire in order to get the best performance. The drawback here is that as the plug wears you'll open the gap even further and it'll misfire etc.
Under the hood my LT1 calls for a .050 gap. I've got an MSD digital 6+, MSD blaster coil, & MSD wires. I run a .060 gap with no problems currently. I've got a set of plugs just sitting here, I was thinking of cutting them back per 65Z01's recommendations. I figured I'd still try a .060 gap and see what happens.
Re: Plug gap vs. performance & cut back plugs. (Nathan Plemons)
I would suggest using your usual wider gap with cut back electrodes; just check a copla plugs in about 6mo or so, especially if you flog it a bit at the strip.
I've found that the Vette needs to be regapped 1-2 times/yr (it sees the strip regularly) whereas the IROC needs little attention (it's just my daily ride).
Since I have a 1 1/2hr drive to & from the strip each car logs about the same mileage yearly.
