Default Bad transmition!

Ijust got a 87 with the 4+3 but it happens that the tranny is burnt up. The overdrive is gone and the tranny didn't have any oil. Do you guys think that I should do? I have a friend on his shop who is going to rebuild it for about $1800. Any advice please give your opinions.

Go find a good used Borg Warner 6 speed.. But if you want to keep it.. Some questions..

The 4 speed is pretty cut and dry transmission.. But does your friend have any experience with the OD unit. If not, he needs to be very very careful. The OD unit is not complicated but essentially it's a small automatic transmission. The caution is that the pistion inside is under a lot of pressure and if you don't properly hold the pistion back, it will cause you to have a very bad day. Read the caution on the front of the unit,, it's not kidding.

1.800 dollars seems very cheap considering I wouldn't touch the OD unit for less than 1,200 as a bench unit. Total cost transmission, OD unit and a clutch, retail would be about 3600 - 4000 dollars depending on the clutch.

Yes the 1800 is to replace all the bad things plus the cost of the clutch he was telling me I could get a 3 point high perf clutch for about $100 more than the normal one and these are brand new. If you have a idea of how much it would cost to replace the inside please let me know. He had also told me I was lucky becuase another vet with the same tranny spent $3000.
So I guess I am lucky for this price and he does good work.

Does any one has any other comments? Why do the also have different overdrive ratios?(like .60 and .68) Why would they do this on some vetts and not to all

He must be one heck of a friend... Given the cost of the parts for the OD unit, 4 speed trans and clutch assembly, he's pretty much doing at cost.

However, I wouldn't recommend a three finger racing clutch assembly, but rather a diaphram clutch assembly. For OEM, I'd recommend either the GM OEM, LUK or Sachs clutch assembly and for high performance I'd recommend a Centerforce Stage II, ACT or a LUK Gold clutch assembly. I'm partial to the Centerforce Stage II because they have counterweights that actually put more pressure on the disc as RPM increases.

Again, not to question your friends ability, I would make sure he's either done or is knowledgable on a Corvette OD unit. Done incorrectly or he could cause more damage to the unit costing more in the long run not to mention the potential to hurt himself.

Good luck..

No idea about your specific transmission... but I've had two transmissions rebuilt in the past 3 years.... 1 for $1200 (1981 Vette) and 1 for $1800 (1997 Trans Am). Seemed fair to me, especially after driving it vs. how it used to be. The second one included a shift kit being put in.
