Default HELP!! No reverse!!

Just finshed 6 months of work on my '88 including a rebuild of the 4+3. Hopped in for a quick 2am test drive and nothing happens when I put the car in reverse! It will move like an inch or two, then nothing. Pushed the car back by hand and tried 1st. Works fine. 2-3-4 all good. Jacked up the car and fiddled with the shift rod for reverse. Still nothing. I can hear some whirring noise coming from the O/D.
There she sits with brand new wheels and tires among a bunch of other mods, and I can't get out of the garage under my own power. Looks like my 8am exhaust shop appointment is history. :cry

Any ideas out there?

Was the tranny rebuilt by a shop ??
It sounds like linkage problem.
Did you set up the shifter according to the manual ??

The 4 speed was rebuilt by a trans shop with a good rep in racing circles, manual pros. The O/D by a seasoned trans guy at the shop I work at.
Already worked with the linkage to no effect, but just got a tip on my other tread about adjustment proceedure. Try, try again

Had the person who did the rebuild ever done the corvette OD unit before?? Does it seem to freewheel when the OD unit is engaged and you lett off the gas pedal?? If it does then he more than likely put in the sprag clutch in backwards i.e. engaging in the wrong direction. It's a common mistake for someone who might not have ever done one before... How how did I now that??? LOL

If you drop the pan, you'll most likely have burnt fluid which means the unit will have to come out and be redone.

Uh-oh, that sounds like my problem. You had no reverse right? The O/D does seem to be free wheeling at times. I've only driven it 20 miles or so. Maybe I can take it apart and save it? :banghead: :banghead: :cry :cry

Been there done that..

Many years ago I rebuilt my first corvette OD unit.. Did EXACTLY :banghead: the same thing.. Recently hired a new trans builder, told him exactly how to do one and to watch out for the sprag direction.. Customer picked up the unit and installed it. He came back complaining of the same thing..

I had to redo the whole unit again. If you followed the books out there, they don't really explain it very well so it's really easy to do.. We rebuild about 6-8 of those units a year because I'm about the only one stupid or crazy enough to do them.

Let me know if I can help

Tim
