Default Anyone using Mobil 1 R 0W-30???

Looks like Mobil says this is a superior oil that can be used in street applications where 5W-30 is recommended by the mfg.

Would seem to be ideal for Corvette as every day oil. They don't say but it appears the drain interval would stay the same.

Get concerned as there was recent dyno test in car magazine and they suggested the Royal Purple race formula be changed after every run.

What do you think?

It probably won't hurt anything. Mobil 1 knows what they are talking about. I put 10W-30 in mine. Not real sure why I use it over 5W-30, I guess I just like the green lid better.

my ol' 70' pontiac W/469cid is my first car and my "quick" car,and i run that 0w-30 oil to reduce friction when i go to the track.its not driven often but twice a week or so for the weekend. oil pressure on it is around 55 cold and 25ish when hot. when i had 15w-50 in there it was 80 cold and 45 hot.i'd do everything it takes to drop a tenth. that is thin oil,i know, but its not a daily driver and i'd recomend it for a not often driven cars like my pontiac. about royal purple,i dont' have much to comment on there products, but i use alot of LUCAS brand oils in my cars.i've felt the difference the trans slip makes when i used it in my other cars th350 trans.

If you believe the sales blurbs, this oil could get you a couple more hp, even over regular Mobil 1, in your quest for 400.

My concern is engine life, not clear if it makes it better or worse??

I ran 0w 30 in the last 406 I had in my Nova. I never dyno'd that way and didn't see any gains over 30W at the track, so I stayed with the heavier weight. Reason was I saw lower hot idle oil pressures and that just made me nervous - for longevity sake.

I'd be afraid to run it in my car. When at full operating temp the idle oil pressure is down there low on the gauge. It's not dangerous but I don't know what it would be like with the thinner oil. I also have enough trouble keeping it from leaking as it is.

On this one I'll go with what the General says to use. It works good and lasts a long time. :chevy

5W30 and 0W30 are the same at operating temps. 0W30 is just lighter or flows faster at start up than 5W30.And the W means its for winter use.

I talked to Mobile Oil a while back and they said that 0w-30 was created for a Mercedes spec. Mobile one's standard answer is "use what the vehicle manufacturer specifies"

Im thinking 30 wieght is 30 wieght...it shouldnt matter if starts out as 0,5 or 10 wieght....the 0,5 and 10 simply means it flows like that wieght when its cold and as it reaches operating temp it flows like 30 wieght....I use 0-30 in my 96 and notice no difference at all...drain intervals are the same as 5 or 10W30......

It seem Mobil is saying that their racing formula is more than just weight..the following is from http://www.mobil1.com

Team Penske, West McLaren Mercedes, Porsche, Mopar Performance, Corvette Racing and an incredible 74 percent* of NASCAR® NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series, and Craftsman Truck Series drivers trust Mobil 1 technology to protect their racing engines. Now the same Mobil 1 technology made available to NASCAR® drivers is also available to you – Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30. With a proprietary blend of high-performance synthetic basestocks fortified with SuperSynTM anti-wear technology, this advanced-protection motor oil is engineered to deliver maximum horsepower in all engine types and sizes.

Benefits of Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30:**

Has boosted levels of anti-wear protection – well beyond those of ordinary motor oils – to help protect engines even during grueling racing applications.
Maximizes power output by reducing internal friction.
Has outstanding shear stability and a robust additive package to help reduce oil breakdown and help extend engine life, even under the most extreme conditions.
Compared to conventional racing oils and higher-viscosity synthetic motor oils, it provides faster flow to critical engine parts at low temperatures.
Delivers exceptional high-temperature protection, even at temperatures up to 400ºF (204ºC).

Applications:
Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is intended for professional and amateur "weekend" racecars, as well as modern high-output engines of all kinds. It is ideal for supercharged, turbocharged and high-revving, high-performance engines used in street applications. Note: Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is a different formula than Mobil 1 with SuperSyn 0W-30, and the two formulas are intended for different applications. Please see the Product Data Sheet for details.

Notice the last "Note" comparing Mobil 1 R to SuperSyn 0W-30...

And the W means its for winter use.
That's not 100% correct. It's a very popular myth but it doesn't actually mean WINTER.

Do a search for "The Motor Oil Bible" and read it, very good information to have.

Why wouldn't you just use the manufacturer recommended weight, unless you've done extensive internal mods?

I used Mobile 0W-30 only during the cold mountain winter months @(4000ft) . I felt that it would flow better @ start up in the 10-20deg. weather. I switched back to the 5-30W for the rest of the year.

For the most part, I agree with you. However, manufacturers are not always known for making recommendations based on performance. If Mobile 1's new 0W Race oil can provide the same longevity and a few more ponies, it's worth looking in to.

Oil is tested at two temps for thickness, 200f, and 0f.
Should an oil be tested at 0f, and its thickness is closest to that of
#5 reference oil (at 0f), the test oil is 5w-xx.
Should an oil be tested at 200f, and it thickness is closest to that of
#30 reference oil (at 200f) , the test oil is xw-30.
Note that viscoscity extenders* are needed to have 5w oil behave like
30 oil at the upper test temperature, and that the viscosity extenders
can breakdown with use. That said, Mobil 1 is a fine product.
(* for traditional oils, synthetics may require less v.extender) :auto:
