Got up this morning, fired up my 1986 and it stalls, figure no problem, been sitting for a week. Fire it it runs, get some blue smoke out the back. But it goes away in a few seconds. hmm. Take off down the street and it dies again. Just turns over. Few more tries, it starts back up, run it to the driveway, take it out of gear and let it run. It idled from 800-1300 and back to 800 again, over and over then just dies. Pop the computer code checker in and it shows all clear. Car will not start, just turns over now (fuel pump can be heard running, it's about a month old) can smell the gas going in.
Haven't had to much time to look at it, had to walk a mile or so to my wife's work to get my truck so I could get to work.
I'll be watching this too because my 86 did the same thing right about 50 miles after I replaced the fuel pump.. Now it's about 200 miles later and it hasn't happened again.... I hate stuff like this!!!
My '86 did something similar, turned out to be the MAF sensor. I had no codes so I took it into a Corvette repair shop and they hooked it up to their professional equipment and said nothing showed up, then they unplugged the MAF (forceing the computer into Limp home mode) car ran decent enough for me to drive to the parts store and get a new MAF.
So bottom line disconnect the MAF and see if that helps.
make sure you have fuel pressure. Press the little needle on the fuel rail. Gas should squirt out. But it does sound like your getting gas. Check your HEI distributor for spark could be a module or coil went bad. Usually if the module pops the car wont start at all because there is no spark. But the presymptoms were a wandering idle. That sounds like the computer was trying to figure out the fuel air mixture. The MAF would set a code if it went south. It actually sounds like VATS or the module. Ill be watching this post. good luck... :smash:
