hey guys im lookin for an inexpensive mod to do to my car for now. i was thinking getting one of the Edwhite performance chips. maybe the one where u go to the 160 deg therm and where u give him your mods and they custom program it. I currently have a relatively stock engine. Magnaflow exhaust w/ no cats, SLP Claw, and thats it (besides my new throtle body by-pass kit  )...anyways, is that a good mod to do? I was wondering if the only hp gains come from the rev limiter being lifted? also is my fan gonna be constantly kickin on? im not very good about this type of thing, and i just want opinions from u guys before i do something dumb or waste my money...thanks
Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
A YEAR would be nice !!! But for what it's worth, I bought a HyperTech Thermomaster chip that requires a 160* thermostat, and promptly sent it back. A 160 stat is too cool for everyday driving. If you need it for racing... Fine. If the engine actually runs that cool, it's too cold. If it warms up to where it is currently running, or close, the warm up takes too long. As instructed, I made back to back 1/4 mile passes. The stock chip was approx .05 faster than the HyperTech. I saw no reason the spend $150.00 for THAT! I sent it back for a refund.

Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
Ski_Dwn_it did a good job with my '92. I have about the same mods as yours and I really just wanted the EGR/AIR out which was acomplished. It feels a little quicker with my buttometer. :yesnod:

Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
The Hypertech thermomaster was my first mod on my original engine. I was very happy with the results of the chip but you are going to find mixed emotions on this issue. Some love it some hate it.
Too bad you don't have a 90 automatic, I still have my chip and would have sold it to you cheap.
Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
I'd just install a 160 degree stat and a lower temp fan switch and run your stock chip. This will save you $100+ and your car will likely be as quick or quicker than with the aftermarket chip. :yesnod: I know our cars are different, but in my L98 a Jet stage II chip (similar to Hypercrap) slowed my car down in the 1/4 by about .2 seconds. I sold it on Ebay for what I paid for it.

My report, above is not emotional. It is non judgemental, track tested fact. Not every car will react the same. Different years will likely show different results. Different chip numbers and brands are apt to have varing results. My origonal post merely relates MY specific experience.
Re: question on performance chips (VictorRussell'92)
ive been talkin to ski_dwn_it and i think im gonna move on that. Thats cool since me and you (Victor Russell'92) have close to the same car w/ the same mods. and if u like it, then im sure itll work just fine on mine. I talked to Jesse abit this morning and he was very generous and informative. I plan on pullin the trigger on this within a month or two. (have to use birthday $$ or tax returns, school laons are hindering my ability to mod the vette :nonod: )
Jesse thanks for the help, hope to do buisness soon

Thats great Jesse is a good guy to deal with. just be sure you have another car to drive while the chip is gone. He is pretty busy. :yesnod: Also make a list of things you want done with in. There was a good post about this not too long ago.
Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
A custom chip is a whole other thing from the pre packaged, "one fits all" shelf chip. I would think you could only expect minimal gains with your stock set up. But that said, you won't find a more dedicted, capable tuner, than Jesse. Good luck and...
Re: question on performance chips (VictorRussell'92)
yeah i have no problem drivin the ZR2 around while the vette is gettin done....but its gonna be rough on a nice weekend, seein the vette sittin w/o action. :D
Re: question on performance chips (smokeyburnouts)
Save your money. You wouldn't see appreciable gains unless you bought a truly custom chip, meaning datalog - reburn - datalog -reburn... Even then, on a stock motor, gains would be minor. The noticable changes come from fan temp changes, torque converter, etc. What car do you have? L98s rev limiter is around 10,000 in the stock programming. If the money's burning a hole in your pocket, spend on chip burning equipment so you can make changes as needed.
Aaron, i have a very mildly modded 92 LT1. I have an SLP claw, Magnaflow mufflers with gutted cats. thats it, motor-wise. Then if i buy from ski_dwn_it, he offers reprogramming when mods are added.

Re: question on performance chips (VictorRussell'92)
Did you read the whole post?
I read the first post with the question and skimmed over the rest of the thread. I missed the part comparing cars (Lt1s) if that's what you mean. I guess that negates 2 sentences from my reply, unless someone reading the thread wanted to know the set rev limit in an L98 program
