I just replaced my opti and water pump and the car won't fire. I have checked the obvious things. I have made it all the way back to the opti harness which I just replaced. There isn't any sign of leakage around it, besides, it is hard for me to think it would fail in the matter of a couple of hours without me noticing it. (while I was reassembling the car) What are the odds that a brand new ac delco could be faulty?
:mad
Re: Opti-Has this happened to you? (republicanhunk)
It's possible, but I doubt it. It's also possible to have misaligned the opti on the drive though. There is a spline on there to prevent this but I've seen it get misaligned anyways. After that, check the rest of the connections.
What is it doing anyways? Does it even try to fire or does it just spin? Check the coil connection to make sure it is secure. Next, pull a spark plug wire and hook a spark plug up to it. Ground the plug and see if it sparks while the engine is turned over. This will reveal if it is firing or not.
Also, if the car has been sitting for awhile, charge the battery. I have done that way to many times.

Yup, I'm kinda going through the same thing right now! I'm on my third optispark in less than 3 years! I just installed a Dynaspark ,which they say they test before shipping. So I'm assuming mine is good. I also chased all the wires back to the ECM. All seem good , no shorts or opens that i can find.
Was your car running before you swapped out the opti ? Now it still wont run? Are you getting code 16 and 42?
it was running before i swapped them. It would just stop running after 12 minutes or so. Now, it will not fire at all until i am done cranking it then it will back fire. as far as the spline, i am pretty sure that i put the peg in the big hole on the opti. I went trhough the new harness this am, checked the coil wire, verified the plug wires. arrr thanks for the help guys
Re: Opti-Has this happened to you? (republicanhunk)
I worked on one last fall that I SWEAR I got the spline on right (and I pulled it back off to check it & still KNEW it was right.) It wasn't. I was told to make sure you put the coupler in the block first then mate the opti up to it. It real easy to get it off one notch. The 95-96 it made differantly so it's harder to screw up....

if it was running, and now it ain't, that isn't a bad install. If the notch is off, it will run like CRAP.
I still think the problem could be in the coil/ignitor area. check the coil wire, too.
Re: Opti-Has this happened to you? (republicanhunk)
Have you pulled any codes?
This sounds very simular to what I am experiencing..I'd be very interested in what you find... I've chased all my wires and signals , now im waiting on an ECM.
My 1st opti went out like that. at first it wouldn't start at all . But a few days later it would run till it warmed up then just die after it warmed up.
Well, it is fixed as far as I know, you guys were right, I didn't line it up correctly. As far as ecm codes, it has been my experience (3 times now) that whenever my car doesn't run properly for an electrical reason, it is the opti. when i was getting codes it was a 36. I am not getting any anymore!! :) :hurray:

In the future, you can test fire the car before you reinstall the water pump and everything. Just put the balancer, air intake and MAF on. Won't hurt to run for a few seconds that way.
