Default Setting valve lash

I have been waiting about a month for my new pushrods to come, hopefully they will turn up next week. So my question is, since the lifters have been sat in the engine for a while, will they have collapsed in some way - ie can I just do the zero lash and 1/2 turn thing and will it be OK?

89 roller hydraulic by the way

I don't see a problem. Some say if you waite too long the lfter will bleed off.
The spring in the lifter forces the plunger to the top. As long as you waite a few minutes after you loosen rocker, the plunger should return to the top.
New lifters have no oil in them and they recommend adjusting static.
My 2 cents worth :jester

It is a non issue. Many cars sit longer than that over winter. Maybe yours is one of them. Those lifters don't clatter on initial fire up.

Why is it taking so long to get a set of pushrods? Is there something special about them?

If you adjust your rockers like I do you'll probably be alright. It tends to leave them just a hair loose and then when the lifter pumps up it takes out the slack.

I lilke to put the rocker on the stud, making sure the valve is completely closed of course. Loosen the inner lock so it's completely out of the way. I then tighten the outer nut with my fingers until I can't tighten it anymore. This is fairly close to 0 since my fingers don't have the torque required to really compress anything. I then tighten the inner lock down. Now at this point it would be too loose and the inner lock would back out in no time.

After tightening the inner lock, take your wrench and tighten the outer nut as far as you can. You'll probably get about 1/4 of a turn out of it. This will serve two purposes, first it'll get you about right on the lash, secondly it will jam the inner lock against the threads so it won't back off. The last 3 sets of rockers I've adjusted I've done this way and I haven't even had to go back and tweak any of them. Even if it's not perfect I guarantee that it'll be close enough for you to start the engine, then you can do your final adjustment however you like.

Check where I live Jake. My dealer waits to get a decent size order for stuff to keep down the shipping costs. Also they are a non standard length, so I had to wait for the dealer your end to get them in.

And thanks Nathan, that's how I have done it in the past, bit difficult to "feel" the torque with an allen key I find.

How about a drop of loctite in there? Any thoughts?

I used to try and lock them down just by tightening the allen nut and they always backed out. Loctite might help. Since I've started doing it the way I described I haven't had any loosen.
