Default New Slipping Tranny?

I just picked up my vette with a new performance 700R4 rebuild and a new 2400rpm stall TC.

Ist and 2nd shifts very hard and positive, the car pulls like a beast.
2-3 kind of slips into it slow and quietly and this is where it starts to get wierd.
On the Highway if I put it in 'D' and go WOT at let's say 70mph, the car accelerates a LOT slower than it did before with the old tranny, and I can feel it partially slipping. Also after 3-4 seconds of WOT in 3rd, I start getting smoke out the back. I've only had this happen once at the RaceTrack last year when the odl tranny was slipping during the 2-3 shift, and smoke poured out the back of the car.

There is no smoke coming at all, in 1st or 2nd, even if I maintain 5500rpm straight for a mile, or go WOT off the line. (Tried many times).

The transmission shop guys are great, and have build many fine specimen, few of which I know their new owners, who run very well.
I am taking the car back on Tuesday to them to have them see WTF is going on.

Anyone had this before, who can explain what is going on maybe?

Default New Slipping Tranny?

Gabe

I am sure it can be resolved quickly and thoroughly.

A funny comparison, Franks Rossler 700 has been FAILSAFE since day one, I blew through two of those with roughly 5000 miles each.

My first 700 from Grant was rock solid, hard use and such required a "Freshen" that one took a couple of tweaks etc to get 100%. Not to worry as I spoke to Grant after you called today, you will be taken care of and it'll be made right.

hang in there and I'll be in touch. from the short time I did see the car go, it looks like an animal down low! off the line etc.

Ohh, I'm not worried. They seem like good guys. I was just wondering on others' input on this. I am not too familiar with how TC and trannies can act up, but know how the car should feel as I drive her a lot, that's all.

Over this weekend I'll have to burn a new chip for the correct calibrations with the new lock-up and higher rpm shifts. Shoudl be interesting. Maybe I'll spend some time to do some other updates aswell (Once the tranny is all corrected).

Same sort of thing happend to the tranny in my truck. 90' 700r4. powerful, lifted and such. The truck seemed faster on the start to 2nd geer and slower through the rest. The od was compleatly worthless B/C no power. So there was a warrentee on the tranny nd this problem started right away after pick up. I toldhem about it they said they would look at it on thurs. 4 days away. Anyways it got worse, I got pissed because I just spent 2k on nothing, I stomped on it getting on the highway and everything was slipping and I was still on it. To make a long story short I blew my engine, blew the tranny got it fixed and tradded the truck for the vette. That was a bad move cause the vette I a p.o.s compared to the truck. But it is alot better at the same time. So b carfull and don't blow your car up!

Well it's kind of a no brainer... if you feel slippage.. DON'T stomp on it and stay on it.. it is very possible as you found out to over rev. :banghead:

Just a thought......are you positive you got the SAME tranny back? The gear ratios, from what I understand, are different from vettes to other passenger cars. I have heard stories that some dis-honest or even unknowing tranny shops swapped in a different tranny because the Vette 700R4s were worth more. I know this probably isn't the case...but hey...it's a shot in the dark.

These guys have done a few vette trannies on forum members, and they were recommended by a friend of mine who's used them before. They seem like stand up guys, so I doubt they'd replace the tranny with a lower-performing one. It just feels like 3rd is slipping and when in OD above 60mph, and I go WOT, it feels like it is between 3rd and OD slipping all the way through it. I just smelled the fluid, and although it is light red, (not discolored or brown) it smells burned. Maybe the 3-4 clutch pack is having problems or something.

Good thing the car does not free-rev. It did that a few times right after I got the vette home after the new tranny, but I adjusted the TV cable a bit and that got fixed. They couldn't do any real testing on the car at the shop as it's been raining here fo rthe past 3 days when it got done, so they couldn't go even 1/2 throttle as the rears cut loose too easily.

We'll see..

With the pro-torque convertor, they use an additive sort of like a friction modifier that adds a scent to the fluid. The friction modifier sort of lubricates the clutches. Without it, there'd be chatter! Take it from me, I had an early pro-torque convertor and once the additive went in, the chatter went away.

All 700R4s have the same ratios , but the Vette has a different servo and different shift points to regular trans making them more desirable.

Sounds like they might have missed something i.e. clutch pack clearances or nicked a piston or accumulator seal.. Did they beef up the trans with some upgrade parts i.e. "beast" sunshell, pinless acculmulator, billeted servos, "Z-pak" overdirve clutches, 13 vane pump, 29 roller sprag?? It will cost a few bucks more, but well worth it.

If the fluid smells burnt, then it's slipping and bottomline, the transmission will have to come out and redone. Sounds like theyre a good shop and will take care of you.

Good luck

Yea they beefed it up and upgraded it to the newer 700R4 specs with heavy duty parts/extra clutches, HD pump, sleeved the servo, etc..

They fixed that problem jay. They run diffrent clutches in the convertors now. That is what Grant said anyways.. Gabe I would get a hold of a builder and have them set the detent cable that way you are covered. Sounds like you are not getting the full force of line pressure in third.
