Default Canton Pan is on!

Got the Canton pan on a couple of days ago and thought I'd share a few pics... The second shows the clearancing I had to do to clear the passenger side knock sensor.

Did you check the clearance on the dipstick to windage tray?

Sometimes those are quite tight and block the stick from dropping in fully.

I like mine!

You know what? I didn't. I was planning on ordering a new dipstick from Canton on Monday for this pan - do you think theirs will clear the windage tray without problems?

What part# Canton pan is that? Is it a 1 or 2 piece rear main seal block?

I actually use the OEM stick...my full mark is 1/3 of the way up the crosshatched portion. This gives me 7 quarts in the engine.

I would figure either dipstick will not insert fully...the windage tray is the stopper. Just try your stock one as the engine is sitting there. Should be pretty obvious if it won't go in that last inch or so...

My stock dipstick didn't work well in the pan. So I bought one from Canton, p/n 20-852. It doesn't go into the block. It threads into the 1/2" fitting on top of the batwing on the drivers side. So then you have to plug the hole in your block where the stock dipstick tube is. Good luck on that one.

Interesting... Thanks for the info! I'll bet a dab of JB Weld would plug that hole just fine! :)

usually they use a small freeze plug to fill the old dipstick hole.

Yep, that's what I did. Only I didn't fill the hole in the block. I took the stock dipstick tube and cut it off so about 1-2" sticks up out of the block. I filled the tube with JB weld, then installed it in the block as normal using rtv, etc. A 3/8" freeze plug would do the trick also. I searched all over looking for one and finally ended up doing the above because I needed to get the engine in the car and I wanted to do that job on the engine stand. Summit, none of my local stores had a 3/8" plug (press in that is, I didn't want to tap the hole for a threaded plug.)

so you're trusting what canton says? the pan is the same depth as stock, and their pickup is the same height as stock, so i'm not sure what to do about that. 7 qts in mine is only barely to the crosshatch (i run a PF1218 filter, which has more capacity than a PF52). this makes me nervous.

what is everyone else doing? what canton says, or going by the stock dipstick? if i go by my dipstick, it takes 8.25 quarts with a filter change for the sump to be full after sitting overnight.

btw, i verified my dipstick reads correctly, so canton is definitely running the oil level lower than stock.

I am using the stock dipstick in mine but a modification had to be made to the tube to get it work correctly. The base had to be cut off a little if I remember correctly.

I didn't want to trust any dipstick. I filled the pan with oil before putting it on the engine and it took 6.5 quarts to go up to the windage tray. I'm running a 1/2 quart filter, so I put 7 quarts in. After first fill, I put my own mark on the dipstick knowing I had the right amount of oil in. 8.25 quarts seems like too much, unless you have a huge filter or cooling system.

:iagree:

Once the entire system has been drained, it takes 8.5 qts to fill mine half way up the hatch marks on the OEM dipstick.
