Hello again to all. I have purcased a Hurst 6 speed shifter and am horrified at the amount of work the instructions have listed. removing the exhaust system and sensors ? For a shifter ? Who out there has installed one and isnt as simple as removing the console plate and rubber boot ? I know that the instructions are there for a reason but this is rediculous. I may just sell the shifter rather than spend the what looks like, enormous amount of time for such a small performance improvement. Thoughts everyone ? Thanks in advance.

Re: Hurst 6 speed shifter, How hard ? (Hairmetal_still_rox!)
Well Removing the exhaust really isn't that tough. I haven't installed a shifter but have heard from a few people thats its a pretty tough install. :yesnod:
Scroll down to where Hib Halverson's article is on the install. If you ask me, I feel this mod is well worth the trouble. I believe my mechanic (CorvetteZ51Racer) did this in under 2 hours.
It's isn't that bad. You have to remove the exhaust, and of course the trim around the shifter. The hardest part is to get the large shift shaft pin aligned so that it can be driven back into place. I beveled the edge slightly on the grinder to make that part easier. If you have access to a lift the job is much easier, doing it on your back is going to make it a bit tougher. All in all it should take you about 3 hours if you never done it before. I feel I can do it in 2 hours or less now.

I think it is well worth the trouble of the install. There are a few who haven't removed the exhaust, but it is much easier to hook up the linkage (from under the car) with the exhaust off.

Don't let dropping the exhaust scare you off. That was actually one of the easier steps. Getting that little pin in, now thats a different story. If you actually enjoy working on the 'vette, this is a good job for the average do it yourselfer.
Re: Hurst 6 speed shifter, How hard ? (Hairmetal_still_rox!)
Thanks to everyone who gave their input. I will give it a shot when I can clear up some decent time. I love doing things myself, I have done all the mods to this car myself and built my bike from scratch myself (that was a challange).

Once you done, you'll love the feel and short throw. I put the Hurst **** on it and I really think it's one of the most enjoyable mods I've installed.
If you'll send me your phone number, I'll gladly call you about my (re)install that was done about a month ago. Mine is a B&M ripper but they are so close to the same on these, it's prety much name only I think in a lot of ways. I'd plan more time than you are hearing here. I'll tell you the little gotchas and some things I noticed. it is easier the 2nd time or when you know what you will be seeing and needing. A lift WOULD help emensely. I did mine on jack stands and it gave me a lesson in appreciating my 69 Z-28 'room to work'. I love the Vette though, it's an incredible car, so I will put up with whatever I have to for it. On a side note, my shop just had the slab poured (40 x 60) and I will be putting a lift in one of the bays. I'm getting to old to keep this up. My e-mail at work is kblack@yahoo-inc.com If you'll send me your phone number, I'll gladly share with you some info and hopefully save you some time. Best of luck. Ken :chevy
