87-99035 miles, don't know what previous owners did  But, I think it's time to change the tranny fluid (auto) not really dirty, not burnt! Here'e the ? Do I have it flushed ? My mech. says $165, My station (Chevron) says $100., tranny place says $65.00-sooooo-what do you all think? I'm not gonna do this messy job myself!
It is messy, but very doable yourself for about $20, although it's not a flush. As long as they completely flush the system, the least expensive should be the same as the most expensive. Just make sure they use good quality fluid.
100K is the recommended service interval for non-taxi use. It calls for filter and fluid change. You should flush it from the connection at the transmission cooler fitting. If you just change what is in the pan, your not getting the fluid in the torgue converter nor the cooler.
The $165 is pretty close to what Chevy charges (near $200.) but doesn't sound like it includes a new filter and gasket. I had mine changed just before it rolled 100K. I had Chevy do it. When they did the service their Vette mechanic came an got me from the waiting room so I could see the inside goodies after he got the pan off and filter out. It was very very clean inside which was good news. He replaced the filter, put on a new gasket and buttoned it up. Then connected a machine to the hoses at the cooler and flushed the system. It was very interesting to watch the old fluid cycle out. There is a glass tube on the machine. Even though it didn't look that dark, it was compared to the new bright red fluid during the exchange. They also put in an additive too I think. The total bill was $216. out the door. It takes 14 qts of fluid, plus the filter kit, etc.
Last fall, when I had my fluid/filter changed, I asked him about a flush. He stated that he gets a lot of business from people who had their's flushed. Seems that it tends to losen up gunk and just moves elsewhere. Most often they'll loose reverse a month or two afterwards. :smash:
I'm sure other's may disagree, but that was his experience. You might want to check around.
I just had my 86 done this weekend ie. filter change plus flush. Fortunately for me , I have a cousin who owns a lube shop. I paid $135.00. I can tell a difference in shift performance when the tranny is cold, No difference when hot. Mine was slow to shift into OD on cold mornings, Now it is OK. I suspect the filer was the culprit here. Also, there was no debris in the pan, So I'm good to go. I hope you have the same good result.
