I was having terrible sounds coming from my front wheel area just out for test on replacing my rear wheel bearings. I was worried I had done something terribly wrong with the assembly of the rear, so I pulled the driver side front wheel and when I just grabbed the caliper it FELL OFF
I looked at it and found the the spring clips were still in place but the pin was GONE. I think the springs were the only thing holding the caliper in place.
Has anyone encountered this before?
I've alrady picked up a replacement, but I'm confused, I just replaced both sides about 12 months ago during a complete brake job front & rear. The pins and clips were all new???
Needless to say I think I found the source of the noise  Just a little worried about a repeat performance.
Alchemist, I'd also like to know what brand pads you had...
I'm almost embarrased to admit they were Raybestos. Hey...i HAD to do my brakes, and was in a pinch and couldn't wait for a set of Hawks to be delivered. NOW i keep a set back!
It happened to me also. I was exiting off the freeway and heard bad sound pulled over and the caliper was laying in my rim gouging it very bad. I had the car for about eight months/3000 miles and had not done any brake work to that point. Replaced the pin and eveything is fine execpt for the scar in the rim.
Well I am using Performance Friction pads, I was told they would work good for autocross and they seem to do pretty well.
Onebighitter, sorry you had this too but glad to hear I'm not alone. When I was driving home I heard a loud bang. I thought I had run over something that had kicked up against the underside of the car. I guess now I know better it's the brake pin checking out. Maybe the retaining clip on the end failed and allowed the pin to work it's way out?
It is fixed now and tested so I now have another thing to keep my eye on.
My scenario was months after my last autocross. It was only about 2-3 trip in the car as I don't drive it much. I had a 90mile drive after the last autocross and nothing was wrong, but then after about 60 miles more I encountered the problem.
Like I said I guess I need to keep my eye on this, but I'm surprised that more people aren't having this problem? Maybe it is the combination of the pin and the make of pad, along with use? who knows
