Greetings fellow Vette-Sters :seeya ,
I have seen a kit available from "Mid America" to by-pass the coolant line that runs through the throttle body on the LT-1. Has anyone used this kit and is it worth installing?
:beatdeadhorse:
Save your money.
On my L98 all that was needed was a hose coupling. Its similar on an LT1 and I'm sure you will get a few pics from the guys.

Re: Coolant By-Pass Kit (Defender)
Yeah, it's worth installing. But there's nothing in the kit that you can't do yourself for a fraction of the price.
Just looked at your profile and saw you have a 96. That makes it real easy and free. Remove the short 90 degree hose from the right side of the throttle body and discard it. Remove the long hose from the driver's side of the TB and hook it where the short hose went into the engine. You'll have to take a couple of things off of the right side to access the elbow and the stock spring clamps are a PITA! Throw them away and use a screw clamp.

:iagree: That's what I did on my '96. Free mod. I have no testimony as to whether it is worth anything or not. But, for free, I figured I'd do it.

Re: Coolant By-Pass Kit (94 Octane)
Is this the same on a 94?
The earlier LT1s are a bit different but it's still a freebie if you have some junk laying around. I'm not sure exactly what year they changed. Even if you have to buy a thing or two it's always cheaper than buying the kits.

Exactly! No material, line, tube, or anything necessary!! Just unhook it from your TB and run it directly to the tube that runs along your passenger side fuel line. Easy , and free!
Although, that doesn't mean that I didn't buy the "kit" before reading the forum :leaving:
I agree with everyone else, don't buy the kit. I did the bypass for less than $5. I can't tell if it made any difference but every bit of HP gain is a plus.
I don't mean to sound dumb, but what is this coolant bypass and how is it installed, its not the same thing as corvette centrals $500 oil cooler is it? I have an 85 and I'm always looking to something new to it...thankyou :conehead
Coolant bypass is simply bypassing the throttle body coolant flow. GM puts coolant through the throttle body from the factory so it doesn't freeze up in EXTREME conditions which most people never face. Rerouting the coolant around the throttle body rather than through it is supposed to cool down the air due to the throttle body not getting as hot. It's a good theory, and for free, why not believe it?
I did this as well, 1995 LT1, completely free "mod."

I just did mine while I had the coolant drained for a water pump swap. The old spring clamps suck. I had to use pliers around the old hoses to twist them so they would break loose (thanks madquake for that tip). Once they are all off, just installed a straight thru coupler and some small hose clamps. Piece of cake.
I'm not sure if it was the bypass or the new water pump but I'm now running 6-8 degrees cooler than before (used to run 194-196, now 188-190), and I haven't seen coolant temps over 198 yet.
Greetings Vette-sters :seeya ,
Just wanted to follow up and let you all know that I did go ahead with the coolant by-pass mod, and it did reduce running temp by 6 to 8 degrees. It does work. Took about an hour from start to finish. I did not buy the kit, I used what was there. Just disconnect the hose from the driver side, and hook it to the passenger side, then capped off the nipples in the throttle body for that "finished" look. You guys were right, those factory clamps are a PITA! Thank God for worm gear clamps :) .
Thanks again for all the great advice. This is the best forum I have ever been on for ANY automotive info. You all have been super helpful to me and I do appreciate it ;) .
