Performance chips?
I see alot of confilicting information out their on these performance chips...I hear that 1. They don't do anything at all; 2. They work if you have done certain other modifications; 3 They work big time... whats the truth?
Aftermarket chips are very mildly modified. VERY. The reason is that they cant safley tune evryones modified car with one universal program. The best bet is to buy the stuff and burn your own chips. It will probably cost less, and you can burn an indefinate quantity and account for any possible future changes too.Go to the scan and tune section and read everything, then try thirdgen.org, message boards, DIY prom section.
If you have a stock engine/intake/exhaust, you probably wont benefit much anyway. If your planning on some mods- do it yourself or try ski_down_it here on the forum. He has done chips for many on this forum and they all seem pleased.
I have a Hypertech Stage II Thermomaster Chip in my 93. Here is all it did for me:
1. Lowered fan turn-on temps.
2. Stopped searching for 3rd or 4th gear at 40 mph. (automatic)
Other than that, I did not see any other improvements, but those are the only improvements I was expecting out of the chip. A over-the-counter chip will not unlock all sorts of HP. For that, you need to get a tuner to do a custom chip for you.
You may not get extra HP or torque, but don't they change the curves where the torque peak kicks in earlier and helps with off-line acceleration? I've got a chip in my 90 L98, and it seems quicker off the line, and at low-end acceleration. Ultimately, I don't it's worth keeping plugged in b/c my gas mileage has dropped to 10-11 city and 15-16 highway.

Don't you think the fuel economy dropped a little more since now you like to push the gas pedal down a little more and feel that quicker acceleration? For the LT1, I didn't feel any difference in power, just in when the transmission would shift at partial throttle between 3rd and 4th gear. That alone made me hit the gas a little harder for the first couple of years of ownership. :D
