Default Don't get mad....

I have no where else to go. I have a 92 vette and a 95 Toyota T100. With my Tech1, I have successful eliminated and/or repaired all codes...I am so proud of myself. But, I have a problem on the 95 Toyota truck. It's OBDII. I think a lot of the primary stuff is the same system as our cars.

Here's the problem. Truck has 168,000 trouble free miles on it (I love my truck) and for the life of the truck, it started on the 2nd or 3rd turn. Now it really has to spin...15 to 20 times. Starts better cold. No puff of black smoke on start up so I don't think it's injector leak down...burns no oil. So I thought "no fuel in the fuel rails" and replaced the fuel pump (check valve in pump) and filter...no difference. Last night I ran a compression test...180 across the board. Removed the MAF and sprays some ignition cleaner in there just to see...nothing. While I had the air cleaner duct off, I looked inside the throttle body, pretty dirty...but would this cause slow start?

any thoughts from you wizards out there? Oh, by the way...new platinum plugs and wires about 20K back...pulled all the plugs for the compression test...all look the same...light tan to whitish...very clean. If anything it may be running lean.

Thoughts? I know it's no corvette and that this is a corvette forum...but I am a member and would appreciate your help.

Guess 1) Check to see if it has a engine temp sensor and an intake air sensor.
The ECM modifies the injector time constant via these sensors to adjust the 'start' mixture.
One of them 'could' be reporting bad data. No a 'bad' sensor per se. Just one that isn't reading correctly anymore.

Guess 2) The pickup coil in the distributor may be getting weak (it's likely a magnetic pickup) and the distributor isn't sending pulses back to the ECM to tell it the engine is turning until a couple seconds of cranking have passed.

Guess 3) Coil Pack(s) starting to go out.
One of the coil packs may be getting weak and not firing a cylinder at cranking speed and cranking voltage. This 'could' cause start to be a little slower.

OBDII has a LOT more self diagnosis than OBDI.
What codes did you clear.... maybe it was trying to talk to you and you just didn't listen........

All out of guesses.... good luck with it.

Very good. I haven't actually checked for codes yet. I have to figure out which terminals to cross. But there is no "check engine" light or anything indicating something is wrong.

I'll check for those sensors. It has also been suggested the timing belt may have stretched or that the injectors are just flat wearing out. Everything is original. I'm a little hesitant to start replacing the belt, dual overhead cam. I think I could do it...so maybe I'll undertake that because it probably needs it even if it's not related to the start problem.

Thanks for your help. I've searched the web for forums for Toyota...but they're pretty scarce and nothing like ours.

So it starts better cold? Of course you've investigated the Cold Start Valve and related components? Slow starts when hot....if it is affected if you leave it sitting around for about 15-20 minutes? If so, you have VAPOR LOCK. On fuel injection systems, right after shut down, you need to maintain a certain pressure in the system so that the fuel does not evaporate (from engine heat). I'm not familiar with 95 toyotas...although I've worked alot on my 1988 4Runner 22RE. If yours is like mine, the pressure (when off) is maintained by the fuel pump (built in check valve) and the Fuel pressure regulator. Good Luck.
