Well logic has to step into play somewhere. A 9:1 compression engine is not going to need premium. You're right, you might not know, but you can usually hear a slight pinging before the computer does retard timing.
Like I say, I run premium on mine with no detonation. I haven't had the chance yet to try and data log it with lower grade fuels to see what's going on so in the mean time I'll play it safe. For a stock car though you're best off running what the manufacturer recommends, which in most cases is NOT premium.
The only way to know for sure in a modified application is to data log. It's pretty well proven though that it does nothing to run premium in a stock TPI.

Your time slips at the track will know the difference. You may not hear the knock, but your performance will suffer. Keep advancing the timing until the 1/4 mile, mph drops off. It makes little difference if it stops going faster because it is over advanced or if it stops going faster because the computer is pulling timing. Note my previous post: 14* btdc...85 octane gas.
