The throttle cable . More specifically the part near the throttle bracket on the plenum.
I just spoke to GM and there are different cables for 89-91. Corky measured his 85, but they are very different from what I have.
i am trying to determine if the problem is from Cable stretch or someone putting the wrong cable on the car or geometry.
My cable is WAY WAY loose if I do not use spacers behind the bracker to hold the cable away. I have about 4" of spacers. Seems every year I need more and more. Something is not right.
Thanks guys. Get the measurement with the cable fully extended if possible. It will be a great help in determining what the problem is and save me some cash from buying a cable I really do not need if its not infact the cable.
I might have not been clear enough on what I need measured.
What I need is a measurement of how far out past the housing (outter part of the cable, does the inner (small cable) extend when pulled all the way out?
According to the GM parts guy locally they list 2 different ones. 84-88 and 89-91. Not sure what the differences are, as I said he did not have any dimensions to go off of. The difference would have to be on the cabin side of the cable, otherwise the SR etc would all have to be specific to years, right?
That is what is baffling me with Corky's 3 3/4" -4" measurement. Mine is about 9"!
My 90 measures 7" from the little bar and the end of the cable to the shoulder that sits against the bracket, with the cable fully pulled out.
You should take a look at where the cable attaches to the pedal. I've put spacers there to take the slack out of cables to get to fully WOT .
Edit : The difference between the two cables is how they attach to the throttle body. The earlier cable use Jesus clips to hold the cable to the throttle body. The later throttle bodies use a bell crank type arrangement with no clip to drop (and say "Oh Jesus")
I think the later throttle bodies had the cable wrap around a cam on the TB, while the older style were clipped on and were linear. The newer style is not as sensitive off idle (due to cam effect) than the older styles were. I'd like to upgrade to the cam style TB and cable.....so i can more easily set my launch rpm. Right now, moving the pedal about a millimeter changes my rpms by about 300
