Re: Started new engine, got serious problems (NUckINg FuTS)
Did the flex plate come with the engine? The rpm range you describe is where they shake if badly out of balance. Why did the previous owner get rid of the engine? Not all 383s are externally balanced. Good luck on this one!

No, the flexplate did not come with the engine. I bought a standard balanced 400 flexplate. How can you tell if an engine is internally balanced???

Machine shop records-or a complete tear down, when an engine is internally balanced-a good machine shop will give you records, at least mine did. Sounds like an ignition problem-or valve train problem :(

One way is to look closely at the flexplate and the harmonic dampner to see if there are extra weights on them. This would normally indicate that the engine is EXTERNALLY balanced. That's ASSUMING that they are the correct parts for the engine to begin with.
Another, more reliable way, is to drop the oil pan and look at the crankshaft. If the engine is INTERNALLY balanced you should see locations where Mallory metal has been added. They will look like round slugs in the butterflies which are slightly larger than the diameter of a quarter.
You can also call the shop that worked on the assembly to see if they have a record of which way it was balanced, if, in fact, it ever was.
