Dynomax SuperTurbo install report
Old system met a tragic fate with OxyFuel, so it was time for a new one.
Ran open for a while and the volume/resonance was too much for passengers and radio, so decided I needed something.
Exhaust shops local wanted $250 to do a custom install. Parts and everything.
Dynomax and Flowmaster systems are about the same price, so I went with the pre-built stuff. I chose Dynomax because of the (claimed) improved cfm vs. Flowmaster.
Taking the stuff out of the box, I was slightly underwhelmed. The kit is basically four pieces. The mufflers themselves. And the transition pipes. This is a cool concept as it increases options for changing mufflers or servicing the rear end of the car.
The mufflers themselves are really just OK in quality. The was LOTS of weld splatter and the hanger are installed with just a few tack welds. The tips are stainless, which I though was cool.
I decided to paint the muffler bodies before I installed to give them a fighting chance against rust, etc... and for that low-profile look. I burned a full can on Rustoleum BBQ black paint on the two mufflers and transition pipes. I masked the stainless tips.
The hardest part was getting the old pipes off the factory "Y". After much fighting with various tools, they finally succumbed to the right-angle grinder.
Install was a snap. The transition pipes are a mandrel bent 2.25" to 2.5" piece and are pretty nice. Another inch in length would have made the install much easier though as there is not as much overlap at the transitions as I would like. Install is with standard muffler clamps. Included stuff was bottom of the barrel. I will be upgrading to stainless later.
A note to '91 owners. The 84-90 uses a threaded exhaust hanger (female) on the muffler, so the muffler is held by a bolt. While the '91 has a fixed stud on the muffler, so the muffler is removed by taking off the nut.
The Dynomax system is set-up for the earlier style, so I ran down to the store and picked up a pair of M10 bolts and lock washers.
The appearance after install is pretty good. They could have fixtured the tips better, but I am sure it is better than a local shop would have done.
Now, what you've all been waiting for. Sound... Well, as reported here before, its not a whole bunch louder than stock. It screams a bit as the rpm's rise, but not much.
There is a VERY slight resonance at 1500rpms, but not much. This is a system that you can cruise all day in and not get beat-up AND carry on a conversation.
If you are looking for a bunch of noise and rumber, these are NOT for you!
Performance is equal to straight pipes as indicated by my onboard laptop.
The mufflers do give the car a burble/backfire under deceleration that is normally associated with a low-restriction system. MUCH toned down over the open pipes.
Next step: dual 2.5" into 3.5" into dual 2.5" to really help the flow.
Stay-tuned!
UltraFlows will (not surprisingly) flow better, but will be considerably louder.

Actually, the UltraFlow is a totally different design. The Ultra is a straight through design, while the SuperTurbos are (surprisingly) a Turbo, or twin tube, design.
