OK...after the shock of it all...I am replacing the engine. It's gonna cost me $3700 for the new engine and labor to do it all. I'm getting a 36 month/unlimited mileage warranty on the engine and a 1 year full labor warranty & a 2 year 1/2 labor cost warranty on the install. What I want to do is install the LT4 Hot Cam. Thanks to fellow members, I found the kit for $489 at SamTaylor.com. I have read other posts about grinding the valve covers, reprogramming the computer, and that the kit doesn't include roller tappers. It is starting to all sound discouraging! Bottom line...with a brand-new engine, what exactly do I need to install this Hot Cam and is it all worth it?
It sorta depends on what was in the brand new engine to begin with. Is it a brand new GM engine or a brand new rebuilt engine from a third party? GM would give you a stock timing set, it maybe a wise move to replace the timing set with a set from a 96 LT4 engine. For use with a HOT cam going to the LT4 extreme timing setup isn't really necessary.
Also it depends on what year engine you got the replacement engine for. The earlier 94 and back LT1 engines, used a different timing set and timing cover for the non-vented Opti spark. Here again it may be a wise choice to upate that now as well. You would need a late model 95 timing cover, late model Opti spark unit and the matching late model LT1 timing set or the LT4 timing set.
