I know you need a pully puller to get the hub off the crankshaft but the actually balancer is held on by 3 bolts....will it just fall off if those bolts are removed or is it pressed on. Thanks
For an LT4 car.
It won't just "fall" off, but if are going to be running the engine or pulling on the ring, you need the bolts in to hold it. You can lightly tap on the balancer and knock it off without the bolts in it.
In a perfect world the balancer would just slip off after you remove the three bolts. However, it most likely is affixed to the hub due to corrosion. You could tap on it to remove it. I tried that but I actually had to do more than just tap. Its in a bad spot. You could use a long extension of some kind and tap on the balancer from behind/underneith the car. You really can only get to a few spots of the hub and it has a tendency to bind when tapping off. Or you could try and rent some type of claw puller, I've never actually tried that. not much room, may not work. The third option is to spray down the hub/balancer center with penetrant (PB Blaster!). Than go rent yourself a AC compressor clutch holding tool for autozone (made by 'OEM'). This tool has small tips on one side used to hold an AC clutch to unbolt it. But on the other side of the tips it has bigger studs/pegs. These just so happen to fit VERY nicely into the holes drilled into the edge of the balancer. Get two to fit into the balancer, tighten them down to the handle, and torque on that tool until you get the balancer to spin on the hub. It should then come off the hub much easier.
I just loosened the the 3 bolts about 1/2-3/4 turns soak in penetrating oil come back 30 minutes later then start the engine. Ususally loosens it right up.
