I am rebuilding the L98 and wonder if the Mini Ram would work well and any suggestions or experiences with them. Would I gain enough performance that it would be worth getting one? Are they set up to work with the OEM sensors and such? Would it clear for my hood to shut? Who makes a good unit and about how much do they cost?
I decided to go with the Crane cam 104224 power max 2032, 1.5 roller rockers. Where do I get a valve kit and is it a good idea to go with 2.0 valves or won't the mini ram give enough breathing to use the big valves? Will the stock heads take the install of them ok or not? I have to meet emissions starting next year so maybe the bigger valves would create a problem there as well. For that matter would the mini ram cause emissions problems?
You all have been much help and I thank you for it. Nothing like this forum.
I put a mini ram on my 85 some years ago. Along with it I installed a TPIS cam, TPIS ported AFR heads, TPIS headers, a 58mm throttle body, and had the chip reprogrammed by the late Jim Formato, etc. (see sig.). The installation is pretty straight forward, you will need to understand the fuel and vacuum plumbing so you can make all that work, not real complicated, but not exactly like the TPI system. The mini ram has all the necessary ports for the the vacuum plumbing and sensors for the ECM. TPIS has everything you need, and there are many other soursec for the various parts (heads, cam, valve train, etc.) as well.
As for performance, I am happy with the set-up for how I use my car, mainly road course use. I did most of the mods at the same time so I can not say how the minim ram will do on its own without heads, cam, headers, etc. The minim ram will bolt up to stock heads. But like always, the better job you do of matching the various components the better the result will be. It does give you more high rpm power if that is what you are looking for. There is no problem with hood clearance, it is actually lower than the TPI system.
If you need to meet emissions then the mini ram will likely not work for you. It eliminates the EGR system so you likely will not pass a sniffer test or a visual inspection depending on what is required in your location.
I just posted a link below on another thread. It's to a site where the graphs and Dyno Jet numbers are posted of a direct comparison between a modified TPI setup and a MiniRam. ZZ4 engine, Hot Cam, 58 TB, Edelbrock base, AS&M runners and ported plenum Vs Miniram.
The MiniRam was substantially down on TQ and HP below about 4800, then it took off and posted over 300 HP at the rear wheels at around 6300, well ahead of the TPI setup. http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28...MRwebpage.html
