Heater Core from engine compartment

In all the articles, people reference going through the dash. However, in the Mid America article referenced in some of the forums, it says that the General changed the 1990+ so you can come in from the engine compartment. I have a 1990 and am curious if this is true. If so, has anyone tried it?

Mine just went and a friend looked at it and said he thought you could do it from outside.
