I had to go out of town & ended up gone for 6 weeks. My son came by to start my cars but the '88 was dead. He charged the battery, started the car, drive it around the block everything seemed ok.
I get back and start the car but everything is odd. Radio goes on but no sound. Antenna goes up, sometimes. All the instrument readouts are partial segments. Car idles ok but bogs out on accelleration. Shut the car off and restart it after a few minutes and Anti Lock light is on, now radio works. Segments are okay but engine won't accelerate. Try again to restart and back to earlier symptoms.
Battery is new (Optima Red Top). I'm gonna disconnect the battery for a while and see if resetting everything helps.
I too have an '88 that I just took out of winter storage with a dead battery. I charged it and took it out on the road for an hour or so. No problems like you've experienced other than having to reset the clock, climate controls, radio stations, etc.
However, I was having some problems with a fairly rough idle. And every time I would come to a stop, I'd stall out as I watched the RPM's drop from the normal 8-900 to 3-400 to nothing. I'd have no problem re-starting it but it kept happening over the course of my little drive.
I kept it on idle in my driveway for a half hour or so and got the RPM's up to about 3500 a few times and now everything is perfect.
The question I have is this, do those "battery blocker" things work? Are they worth looking into as I'll be storing my car each winter.
I reconnected the battery after charging it for about an hour. Car started fine, everything works okay. Very strange. I've had a low battery more than once over these 16 years and never had symptoms like this. It appears everything is okay. :) I was really worried that the computer was bad or something like that.
Thanks for your interest and replies.
