Had my 96 LT1 A4 w/67000 miles transmission rebuilt in February, because car would not shift out of 2nd. Thursday I'm driving around 65 stomp on the gas and RPM's shoot to over 5000. No second to third gear shift again. What gives only 1500 miles since rebuild. Please advise what could be the problem or are these transmissions that bad? Taking it back to tranny shop tomorrow to be covered under warranty but would like some assurance it won't continue to keep happening. Should my 12 month warranty start over again, I think so. Is this a common problem with these transmissions???

Re: Transmission help please (ravenlunatic)
Is your car used for racing? If its a "stock" rebuild, it's just going to keep burning up. There are a few upgrades That should be made, and depending on the abuse you put it through, fully upgraded. :smash: If you need help, let me know.
The rebuild was supposed to include a transgo shift kit and a heavier duty clutch pack. Is this what you meant by upgrades? Anyone else had this problem? Successful fixes or suggestions are welcome, please.
The shop said they checked for codes to see if the computer was stopping the shift, no joy. They said their next step was to check a solenoid and then pull the tranny. Does this sound like a logical troubleshooting sequence to the tranny experts out there?

yes.. if the B solinoid is sticking, it won't shift into 3rd. Its not hard to check. Unless you totally nuked the 3-4 clutch pack, I'd be willing to bet you have a problem in your V.B. which clutch pack did they install?? shouldn't really matter on a street car, if all else is in working order. I'm sure they will find the cause of the problem. good luck
stopped by the shop at lunch and the tranny was out and they found the problem to be a leak at a check ball in the ring gear, they are going to replace the ring gear, I got the impression it was going to be a used one. The last time the tranny went up it was a check ball that got stuck in the vb. Both times burnt out the 3 and 4 clutches. They drilled out bigger wholes in the vb put in heavier duty clutches the shift kit and a new torque converter. They said it should be back in by tomorrow. Hopefully it lasts alot longer this time. Thanks for your response Tom!
If you haven't already done so, invest in a transmission cooler. Heat is the biggest killer of automatic transmissions and these cars are designed to run hotter for better emissions. Also check into an external transmission filter.
i beleive you are correct. At least my 94 does. But aftermarket tranny coolers are superior. You can even get them with fans that kick on at certain temps... cool stuff :)
Got the car back today and its shifting out like new, hopefully it lasts longer than the last rebuild. I don't understand why the shop thinks they rebuilt it this time for free. When the mechanic made that comment to me, I said it wasn't free it cost me $1600 in January. I don't think he agreed. :auto:
Since it's a rebuild because of something f-ing up, they better re-start that warranty from the new rebuild date. Last thing you want is a tranny going bad every few months..
Thats what I said, but their reply was you don't start a new car warranty after a claim. I read the fine print in the warranty and I am just glad they honored this repair their appears to be a lot of loop holes for a fly by night company to get out of fulfilling the warranty, they have been honest and respectable in my opininion so far so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and blaming Murphy's Law for the breakdown.
Been there 5 times so far with the stock tranny. I am hard on my toys. Usually the 3-4 clutches burn up. I have broken several torque convertors, weak vanes from flooring from lights. Last time tranny lasted 200 miles, that time I blew a sun gear through the housing on NJ turnpike. It has held together for last two years with much more HP being thrown at it. first get an additional trans cooler that takes the fluid out of radiator and cools it some more. The coolin lines in the radiator can sometimes heat as well as cool, depending on how cool your engine runs. Second, Switch to an expensive HD Torque convertor from Vigilante or ProTorque. Third, have a higher pressure pump installed in tranny as well as Kevlar clutches. Look on http://www.LevelTen.com or Raptor trannies for a list of HD parts that can be put in your trans. I have had 4 $1500 rebuilds from Dealership, some under warranty, some on my nickel. Get a heavy duty Tranny or keep takin it back to shop or trade car in. Those are the alternatives. Always check the fluid, look for it to be bright red and smell sweet. If it turns brown or smell like coffee, you are in process of burnin up another tranny, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. :banghead:
I just got mine back thursday after installing tranny #3. It ain't a lotta fun...is it?
But as far as the warranty goes...most places use the original mileage/installation to initiate the warranty...even if it's replaced. So as a result..i have a fresh tranny with a 600 mile warranty.
