Hooker also makes longtubes. I loved the TPIS headers I put on the 85. Really easy install, only hard part was the passanger side #8 bolt, which is a problem no matter what brand. Go get a hex keyed bolt and save yourself a 2-3 hour headache of making tools to get that tighened down.
Hi.
I have an 85z-51 4+3.and TPIS long tubes. The came on easily. Just be aware of the supporting rod for the alternator must in some cases be grinded a few tenths of a millimeter to go clear of the primary at that place. It is very easy and you will avoid that the rod grine off the coating of the headers.
A comment on stainless steel headers. They are nice to look at and do not rust but the ceramic coating makes the temperature in the engine room lower and the exhaust temp higher and they keep the colour. I have the silver like coating and have had it for a year and no discolourisation has occurred. Very satisfied with them.
I chose to have a heated oxygen sensor as the engine took some time to get in closed loop.
u guys will laugh......but i bought the 1 5/8 coated hedmans with the emmissions crap on them!! yes i know they are hedman's.......but from talking to engine builders in toronto that build prostock and a few guys with some serious horsepower.......they alll say that 200-375 horse, u should be ruinning 1 5/8, and if u are pushing anything over 375+ then go with the 1 3/4......so not that u guys don't know what u are talking about, because u do, but i went with these guys because that is there life, and i also went for a spin in a 94LT-1 with 1 5/8 and it suited the car just great, and the owner was extremely happy, and the car runs 12.9s in the 1/4 mile.
so take it for what it is worth, but my motor puts out a corrected 251/371 at the crank and it is stock, so i figure if these engine builders recommend 1 5/8 and joe's LT-1 that has around 350CHP.........maybe i made the wrong decision....i will keep you updated with i install the headers, high flow, and the flowmaster catback! i am expecting an increase of about 25-30HP, and another 10-15 more foot pounds!!!
forgot to mention i was also in a 87 auto with 1 3/4, and a 88 auto with 1 5/8 last year, and i like the feeling of the added low end grunt, as well as the added few RPM's that the 1 5/8 added!! just felt like the 1 3/4 were 2 much for a stock L-98...
