Read what I just posted for eric daniel-seems we get our clusters repaired but forget about the ground going to the engine compartment-try the ambient sensor thing-per Killebrew.
I had a similar problem with my 86. It would flicker and some times go completely blank. It was a ground problem.
There are two grounds. One goes through the firewall and grounds to the engine. This one has some type of ambient temp sensor in-line with the wire. The other is a black wire that is bolted to the frame on the pasenger side, under the carpet just in front of the door. The second one was the ground that was giving me trouble. Make sure it has a good, solid, clean connection.
I just fixed mine in my 86. Turns out it was a bad connection in the ground pin between the 2 circuit boards in the cluster. A 2 minute fix once the problem was finally found. Works great now!!! :) :)
This is a very timely thread. I just bought an '84, and I have the same problem (a bad ground). Thanks for those links--it describes my condition to a tee.
