Distributor PICK-UP COIL ??? '89 L98 Quick HELP needed!!!
I have a 89 L98, other day car was fine, then i started it and sputtered and then died, no spark, had it towed home to find the igntion rotor had come loose, no prob simple 5 minute fix right... nope not that easy...
well new cap and rotor on and
it's very hard to start, hesitates and misses sometime low other times high rpm.
sometimes it ran good in garage for 5 minutes then miss and hestiation again.
i replace the ignition Coil
i replace the ignition Module
CAN THE PICK-UP coil cause this problem???
need to know before I go pulling the distrubitor and taking it apart.
anyone else ever have a rotor come loose???, i had this happen once before but a new cap a rotor and it was fine, and I know this last rotor was TIGHTENED good when i instralled it over a year ago.
I might have a coil pickup coil too. My car doesn't have a hard time starting but its got an intermitten miss, sometime it is at low rpms going up a hill other times it is at WOT at high rpms. Can't figure it out. I just ordered a new distributor from DUI so I will let you know if that takes care of things.
as an added note I had check the pick up coil with an ohmeter as per GM manual and it tests OK, but who can know for sure, LOL., i had also checked for codes, none, then disconnected the battery and reconnected.
car still ran like crap,
i have a van i put a TPI engine in so decided just for the heck of it to swap the MAF sensor, and voila it is fine now. put corvete MAF in van ran like crap then was OK, so put it back in Corvette and car is OK now, I am going to drive it with the Van MAF carried as a spare just in case...
a weird coincidence the MAF got flakey the same time the rotor came loose.
*as a side note for anyone,
the pick-up coil does have a polarity that needs to be observed when connecting it's leads. If it is connected out of phase, no signal will pass and there will be a no spark condition.

car has been OK all day yesterday in fact idles better and runs smoother, even seems to have more power.
i wonder why the MAF was flakey and if i should expect a problem, i am keeping the other MAF from my van in my car as a spare just in case...
at least that's easy to change on the side of the road ;-)
Here's a guess - bad burn-off relay? If the one in the Vette wasn't burning clean, it would read wrong. Into the van & still ran crappy. Turned it off & the burn-off relay kicked in cleaning the wires. Back on & it ran fine. Back in the Vette (remember van cleaned it) & runs fine. If problem recurs after it builds up some crud, then I'd bet on the Vette's burn-off relay. :flag
