Climate Control Revisisted ....
But first here's a theory of mine. When a car manufacturer is preparing to create a new model they get all the engineers together in one room. Each engineer is given a single task and then they all go away to solve it. The first one to complete their task wins and then the rest of the car is designed around the winners task/part. I found that part on my 84, actually I think there was a tie, but I regress....
So why was the climate control system not working?
1.) I checked to make sure the cruise control worked - it did thus you would think you don't have a vaccuum leak.
2.) Checked all the lines inside the car - all hooked up as they should be (so much room in a Corvette dash)
3.) Checked for vaccuum inside the car - none
4.) Checked at the connection just before entering the car - no vaccuum
5.) Notice that the hose runs inside a piece of flex conduit and preceeds under the engine
6.) Locate the vaccuum check valve (left hand, top rear side of intake), take it off of car and notice the line that should connect to the climate control is not hooked up at all.
6a.) Test the check valve- you can blow through it any which way you try - thus it's not working as it should.
7.) Buy check valve from local GM deal for $6 - hook it back up - still no go
8.) Really don't want to crawl under the car and trace the line - so I check the line where it comes up by the distributor - it seems to be caught - geez, the design of bringing it up by the distributor has the hose pinched - a little light tugging and by gosh it is not only pinched but cut clean from the pinch!
9.) Go to local parts store and buy hard vaccuum line and re-run the line along the firewall back to the connection area right before it goes into the car.
And now we have a working clomate controll system!! - $15.00 in parts and 3 hours of goofing off to fix something that, in my opinion, should never have been routed under the car (it took less than 3 feet of line my way - under the car is got to be 6-8 feet).
Hope this helps the next person hunting down this problem.
Cheers, and a much cooler ride, From Temple Texas
