I'm C4, '95 owner from Croatia(Europe) and I would be very grateful if someone could help me resolve my problem. While I was driving yesterday a sound started appearing in the front left area; something like a metal “clap” and it can be heard in irregular intervals. The sound appears every time the front left side of the car is swung, but I cannot precisely determine whether it is coming from the shock absorber or something else near it. Has anyone had a similar problem?
Ok, here we go; brain surgery via internet. Check the brake calipers to make sure they're not loose. Maybe a rotor has loosened up? One other possibilty would be the front wheel bearing, I've heard them "ping" when they were about to seize up. That's all I can think of at the moment. Get the front tire off the ground and rotate it by hand. If it's a bearing, the rotation won't be smooth.
Hmmmm. It may be a tie rod end, balljoint if it happens when you turn. I had a little metal clip on my brake pad drive me crazy. It wound-up being a simple clip replacement and all is well. Get the wheel off the ground and grab the tire @ 12;oo and 6:00 and check for play. Then 3:00 and 9:00 and check for play. Up and down play means bearings, ball joints. Side to side means tie rod ends or Rack problems. Again, we are Brain surgery on the tele. Good Luck and tell me what you find.
