Hi guys, I'm trying to wrap up my mode one of which was changing my 2.59 rear end to a 3.07. I'm still trying to get the correct speed sensor. I have been trying to get a new one from the dealer but it has been discontinued and there is not one available new in North America. The original 2.59 speed sensor was part #25007224. It has a stamp on the plug socket of 18371. I am hoping somebody has a 84-90 with automatic and a 3.07 rearend that can get that number off the plug socket for me. I am hoping that number will identify the speed sensor. Unfortunately I am going to have to scrounge through the salvage yards to find the correct one. Any help will be greatly appreciated, or if someone has one on the shelf that is no longer needed, I would be interested in buying it. Thanks Guys!! :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse:
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
My Corvette parts book printed in 1989 calls for a 25007339. Again, according to my older book, the one you have should be a 25007338. It has been a few months, but last I heard, Superior Chevrolet had a few left. If all else fails give these guys a try at: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
Thanks, guys, at least I have a chance to get my spedo right. CFI, where did you get your parts book. That would be a big help in putting these cars back right. According to the chart on the forum I need a 25007308, This part has proven to be illusive. I also ran a quick check on the other two part numbers. They are also coming up empty, I'm going to get my dealer to try them tomorrow too. Thanks again guys, I'll be back on the road soon.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
Try calling Superior Chevrolet 1-800-728-8267. Ask for Chris May and tell him you got his name off the forum. He's almost always got the parts I need and will give you a decent price

To the best of my knowledge, they have never been available to the general public. Back in the olden days, GM sent new parts books to their dealers, perodically. I bummed an "old one" from a parts manager, back then. On some operations, I have found the "parts" illustrations more helpful that those in the service manual. You can have mine when I'm done with it.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
Hey man that sounds like a deal, I'd be more than happy to pay you for it. Those factory publications are hard to beat. :hurray:
Don't be holding your breath. I said:
"You can have mine when I'm done with it."
That isn't looking like anytime soon. I've had the car for 18 years and the book for only 15. I have no plans to give up either. If and when I DO give up on my '84 and decide to replace it with something other than a '84-'89 Corvette, the book will be up for grabs. However, I still regret giving up my C3 parts book with the car.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
Hi guys, I think I may have figured out a good solution. After reading some of the information you guys have responded with, I found that there seems to be only two basic sensors. One that takes a driven gear 34-39 teeth and one that takes 40-45 teeth. I am also building a suburban. I have a 700R4 transmission from a 91 suburban that was mated to a 3.42 rear end. It should have basically the correct sensor, but it has a different GM part number. I looked at it visually and it appears that the only difference is the plug socket. I'm going to try taking the matching plug from the doner suburban and install it with the burb sensor in the vette. With the correct gear that should work. I should have this vette back on the road in the next couple weeks. I'll give you guys an update on how this works out. Thanks for the help.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
DOPE!!! :mad I checked the 91 suburban sensor and found that there were no gears, only a reluctor ring on the shaft and a pickup coil. Once again another version. I also found out that the turbo 400 gear housing is smaller than the 700r4  Oh well back to the salvage yard for more rest and relaxation.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
Scroll down the page a bit to CSM's post "need help finding a speed sensor for an 87 auto with D36 3:07". I gave him a dealer phone number in NJ that had one. I found one at a dealer in ND for less money.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
I went thru the same thing trying to locate a #25007308 VSS for my '87 after I installed the 3:07. My local chevy dealer gave me several dealers to call that showed they had one in inventory. A dealer in NJ had one, but he wanted $146.00. I don't have the dealership name, but the phone # is 908-686-2800. He had it listed under the "old" # (25007339). I passed on that one and found one at Fisher Motors in Minot,ND. (1-800-932-8808). I got the only one they had, but they may be able to locate another one. Another option is http://www.transmissioncenter.net. CFI mentioned the link in his response. They listed a sensor for a 40 to 45 tooth driven gear for $39.00. You also need a 42 tooth driven gear (green) #25513049. I got one at my local dealer for $5.50.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (SS409 425HP)
I had NO luck with any of the Chevy dealers I tried this week. Chris at Superior ran the part # and came up with a few more dealers scattered across the CONUS; no luck, either.
I called the Transmission Center (thanks again SS409 425 HP)and ordered one of their sensors for $39.00... I'll let you all know how things work out.
Re: How do you identify a speed sensor visually (87NassauBlue)
WHOOHOOO!!! SUCCESS!!!, Today I paid Johnny a visit at Corvette Country in Fayetteville, Ga. He had a box of all kinds of speed sensors. I thought that if I could see several all together, I could figure out how to tell them apart. From what I have learned about these sensors, there are two sensors for this vintage of car. One takes a gear with 34-39 teeth (2.59 rear end) and one that takes 40-45 teeth (3.07 rear end). These sensors were used in 84-90 corvettes, 85-89 Firebirds and 84-86 camaros. My speed sensor had a brown bakelite end where the plug is. I saw one like mine in Johnny's box, except the top was black. I wiped the grease off it and walked over to the door to get a close look at both of them in the light and Walla!, down at the base of the plug in extremely fine print was a 34 39 on mine and 40 45 on the one out of Johnny's box. When I saw these numbers side by side, I recognized that this has to mean the range of gear teeth that the sensor will accept. There were some numbers scribed on the side of the plug that appear to have no revalence other than dates or lots. Every similar sensor had a totally different number here, but the tiny ones down by the base were cast. Good luck guys, now that we know what were looking for, It would be a lot easier to find the right one in the scrap pile. :smash: :hurray:  :auto:
