Default Service ASR

I know this has been talked about several times but I am about to spend around $1,100 to try and get this fixed and want to make one last check.

When I bought my car several years ago the Service ASR light was on. Every now and then it goes off but it is mostly on.
Pulling codes you get a 72. Serial Data Link Error.
This essentially means that the ECM cannot talk to the ABS control Unit.
AntiLock brakes work
The serial link is one wire. My normal mechanic even tried running a new wire from the control unit back to the ECM. No luck

Several mechanics have looked at it and nobody, including talking to Gordon Killebrew, is willing to say that changing the ABS control unit will fix it.

This part is expensive, almost $700.

Anybody else have this problem or have had it fixed?
