My fans wont come on unless the AC is on could this be a bad relay? I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but I noticed the car zooming past 235 degrees so I looked at my fans just sitting there and cut the AC on then bang they where running. I thought I would post here first and see what you guys think before I break out the meter tomorrow and start chasing wires.
Thanks in advance,
Had the same problem with mine, and it was suggested to me to install a new t-stat. I put a new one in and bam, fans came back on.
I don't doubt you but what would a new stat have to do with the fans
They are cheap enough so I may pick one up today but I just cant see how a T-stat would stop the fans from working. My car runs at 200 deg's as long as the A/C is on and it was 90 degrees yesterday and that was also in traffic.
The fan is ECM controlled with the AC on. Have you tested your fan relay or the thermo switch-it's a fairly easy test. With the key on ground the temp. switch-if the fan comes on now it's a faulty switch. To check relay-located in front of battery on wheel well-jump terminal A black/red wire to terminal E red wire, if the fan now comes on the relay is faulty. ;)
The fan(s) are NOT ECM controlled on an '84. The main fan comes on when activated by the temp switch in the right head between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. Since this is an engine conversion and likely an ECM conversion, too, one can only guess how the fans are wired.
A thermostat change will have NO effect on fan operation.
My Bad, Its a 94 not an 84, I haven't goten around to changing my sig since I got the new car. I just installed a temp switch in the head (Kind of like the 84) so the fans will come on at 180 no matter what. I replaced both of the old fan relays with no joy so I said to hell with it and installed the switch
