Most of what I have read says that the Optispark has a lifespan of about
60,000 miles. Is this true? What are the signs of it going bad, or
does it go bad all at once and just quit? Where is the cheapest place to get a new one? :seeya
Just like any other distributor, you will get misfires and popping and stuff.
I got a little over 70,000 miles before I replaced mine, but I only replaced it because the water pump needed to be replaced.
On my '93 with 36,000 miles, it had crapped out mostly due to sitting around and not be driven often enough(I am the 5th owner). Same happened to my trick, it sat for a long time and the distributor crapped out from condensation and the moisture corroded everything.
My 95 with the vented Opti Spark quit at 46K a few months ago. First I though it was my clutch slipping, then I thought bad fuel/fuel pressure. The cause is probably the water pump. There is considerable grime build up in the front of my engine. After removing the water pump, I can now tell a leak was coming from the weep hole in the bottom of the water pump. Moisture creepage into the Opti Spark over the years caused it to go bad.
If the car is a garage queen that's never driven, good luck if it lasts 20,000. On daily driven cars I've seen them last 110k miles before they start to hurt performance.
