I just sold my 77 corvette and am now looking for an LT1. I just drove a 95 with about 100k. The car drove fine and did not appear to be overheated but the gauge was almost at the 260 mark. The owner said that this was normal for this car. I have heard that these cars run hotter than older ones, but the reading on the gauge is really scary. Is it normal for the gauge to read that high? I understand that normal operating temp for this car is about 230, what do the gauges usually read if everything is operating properly?
Mine in my 88 reads about 200 to 210 at the highest even in 90 to 100 degree weather and right now with the cool weather we have had it stays about 160 to 170, but it has a 160 stat and the chip is modified. My 84 ran a lot hotter and would reach 230 in real hot weather and a couple of times 240 and the scared me, so 260, WOW that would trigger some alarms for me.
Are you checking the analog temp gauge or the digital one? My understanding is that the analog temp gauges are not always completely accurate... their relative calibration is sometimes misleading. I have noticed that in my car, the digital gauge and the analog gauge sometimes don't seem to agree 100%. just something to think about...
230 is with in the norm but a bit on the high side but if your gauge is reading 260 you have a problem and I would check it imediatly. Get an aftermarket gauge and hook it up to the head where the temp sending unit is (On the drivers side head) and see wht the actule temp is because if it is at 260 you need to fix this and fast.

If you are reading the analog gauge, 260 would be all the way to the right almost in the shaded area.
